Reels or Feed on Instagram: When You Use Reels, When You Use Feed
Use Reels to reach people outside your followers. Use the feed to explain and close a sale. See the comparison, official limits, and a starting mix.

Use Reels to reach people who do not follow you yet. Use the feed to explain, convince, and close a sale. These are not an either-or choice. One business account needs both, in a mix that changes with the goal.
This page compares six aspects, states the limits Instagram publishes, then gives a starting mix you can test yourself.
Reels compared with feed posts
| Aspect | Reels | Feed post |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Short vertical video | Photo, carousel, or video |
| Placement | The Reels tab in the Instagram app | Follower feed and your profile page |
| Ratio used | 9:16, full screen | 4:5 for portrait, 1:1 for square |
| Media per post | 1 video | Up to 10 photos or videos in one carousel |
| Image alt text | Not available | Available for image posts |
| Main strength | Reaching people outside your followers | Explaining and closing a sale |
The "Placement" and "Media per post" rows come from the Instagram Platform documentation. The "Main strength" row is our own judgement from daily use, not an official number.
What Instagram states itself
Instagram Platform describes Reels as short videos that appear in the Reels tab of the app. Reels therefore has its own placement, separate from the feed.
Instagram also provides trial reels, which are Reels shared only with people who do not follow you. A trial reel can be promoted to a normal Reel manually, or automatically when it performs well.
That feature clarifies the role of Reels. Instagram uses Reels to test material on new people, not on existing followers.
For the feed, Instagram limits one carousel to 10 photos or videos. Every item is cropped to follow the first one, with a 1:1 default ratio.
Instagram also limits publishing to 50 posts within 24 hours through the Instagram APIAPIThe official door 2 systems use to exchange data, without anybody copying it by hand.Open the glossary. One carousel counts as one post.
One difference is rarely discussed: image alt text is available for feed image posts, but not for Reels and stories. Feed posts are therefore easier for screen readers and machines to read.
When you use Reels
- You want to reach people who do not follow your account yet.
- You are following an audio or format trend that is active now.
- You demonstrate a product in 15 to 30 seconds.
- You show your work process, your team, or company habits.
- You test new material before you use it in ads.
Record vertically at 9:16. Keep key text in the middle, because the top and bottom edges sit under app elements.
Build a hook in the first 1 to 3 seconds. The Instagram algorithm reads watch time, so the opening decides the rest.
When you use feed posts
- You explain steps, prices, or comparisons that need text.
- You show proof: customer reviews, finished work, or certificates.
- You present a product catalogue with sharp photos.
- You announce a schedule, a promotion, or terms people must reread.
- You want the profile page to stay tidy.
Carousels work well for step-by-step material. Put the conclusion on the first item, then the details on the ones that follow.
A feed post with a caption that sells moves people towards an order more easily.
A starting mix you can test
The numbers below are our starting point, not an Instagram rule. Change them after you see the first 4 weeks of results.
- Introducing the brand: 70 percent Reels, 30 percent feed.
- Building conversation: 50 percent Reels, 50 percent feed.
- Driving purchases: 30 percent Reels, 70 percent feed.
Measure one thing at each stage. In the first stage, count the new people who saw you. In the last stage, count the orders that arrived.
Hold the mix inside a content calendar. Without a schedule, teams drift back to the format that is easiest to make.
Use one piece of material in two formats
One carousel with 5 tips can become one 30-second Reel. One product demo Reel can become a carousel of screenshots with explanations.
Export each ratio from the same master file. See social media image sizes for the correct 4:5 and 9:16 values.
Do not use one 9:16 file for the feed. The feed crops it, and the important part is often lost.
