The Instagram Algorithm: Ranking Signals and What They Mean
Instagram uses separate ranking systems for Feed, Stories, Explore, and Reels. Read the official signals per surface and the sensible actions.

Instagram does not use one algorithm. It uses separate ranking systems for Feed, Stories, Explore, and Reels. Each surface reads different signals, so one tactic does not work across all of them.
Official signals on each surface
| Surface | Signals Instagram names |
|---|---|
| Feed | Your activity, post information, creator information, and interaction history. |
| Stories | Viewing history, engagement history, and closeness. |
| Explore | Post popularity, your Explore activity, interaction history, and creator information. |
| Reels | Your activity, interaction history with the creator, reel information, and creator information. |
Instagram publishes this list itself. Other sources that state an exact weight per signal are not using official numbers.

What does not help
- Posting at a fixed hour without reading your own account Insights.
- Adding many general hashtags. Instagram limits posts to 5 tags.
- Asking for bait comments unrelated to the content.
- Deleting and reposting the same post several times.
Questions and answers
Does Instagram lower reach for business accounts? Instagram states that account type is not a ranking signal. Reach differences come from the content, the interaction history, and the surface where the post appears.
Does daily posting raise ranking? Frequency is not a ranking signal. It helps because it adds chances, not because the algorithm rewards it.
What about Reels? Reels uses its own ranking system and reaches people outside your followers. Read the Reels and feed comparison.
